Trade-in or private sale: which number to enter

Selling privately pays more than trading in. That is not a secret, and it is not the whole story: the gap buys you convenience, and the convenience is worth different amounts to different people on different weeks.

The number that matters for any upgrade decision is the one you will actually receive, not the best offer on the internet. Entering a trade-in quote while planning a private sale is the single easiest way to make the calculator lie to you.

The size of the gap

Trade-in pays less because the buyer takes the risk, the storage, the testing, and the resale. The gap is commonly described as 20 to 40 percent, and it widens with the age of the machine: a one-year-old laptop trades at a smaller discount than a five-year-old one, because the resale market for old hardware is thin.

Treat those percentages as a shape, not a rule. The real number is whatever two specific offers say on the day you decide.

What private sale actually costs

Time. Listing, answering questions, meeting a buyer, and sometimes a second meeting when the first buyer disappears. That is an evening, not five minutes.

Fees and risk. Payment reversals, counterfeit notes, and the occasional buyer who expects retail support from a private seller. On marketplaces, fees apply and vary by category.

Price risk. A listed machine may sit for weeks while its value falls. The asking price is not the sale price, and the sale price is not the price today.

When trade-in is the better deal

When private sale is clearly better

How to price it

Look at completed sales, not asking prices. Asking prices sit above the market by design; completed transactions are the market. If you cannot find completed sales for your exact configuration, take the closest match and discount for storage, condition, and warranty remaining.

The line to put in the calculator

Whichever route you choose, enter the amount you expect to receive after fees and after the risk of a failed sale. If the difference between the two routes is under a hundred dollars, take the faster one and stop optimising: the time you spend deciding costs more than the gap.
