How to value your current laptop before an upgrade

Every upgrade calculator asks for one number nobody is sure about: what your current machine is worth. Guessing high makes keeping look expensive and buying look cheap. Guessing low does the opposite. The decision swings on a figure most people invent in ten seconds.

This page is a method for getting that number without pretending to know your local market.

Price the sold ones, not the listed ones

Asking prices are advertisements. Completed sales are the market. Look for listings that ended in a sale, filter to your exact model, and ignore anything still sitting unsold after weeks: those are asking prices that the market refused.

If you cannot find completed sales for your configuration, take the closest match and adjust for the differences below. A close match with an explicit adjustment beats a vague guess.

The five adjustments that matter

Storage. The largest single multiplier after model year. Doubling storage commonly moves the price by a noticeable fraction, and it is the easiest thing to verify on your machine.

Memory. On models where memory is soldered, this is a purchase-time decision that the used market prices in permanently. On models where it is not, the adjustment is smaller than sellers expect.

Battery condition. A worn battery is a known future expense, so buyers discount by roughly the cost of the service. If you have recently replaced it, say so and show the cycle count.

Cosmetic condition. Scratches on the lid cost less than scratches on the screen. Be honest: a buyer who finds a hidden defect after agreeing a price will either walk or renegotiate, and both cost you time.

Warranty remaining. Transferable coverage is worth something concrete, and buyers pay for it. If yours has expired, do not price as if it had not.

Timing

Used prices fall when a new model launches, because the previous generation becomes the obvious alternative. If you are selling, launch windows are the worst time to sell privately and often the best time to accept a trade-in, because trade-in programs price against a schedule rather than a market.

The number to enter

Enter the amount you will receive, after fees and after the risk of a failed sale, not the amount you hope for. If your estimate is uncertain, run the calculator twice: once at the optimistic price and once at a conservative one. If the verdict flips between the two, the decision is too close to call on money, and you should decide on something else.

When to stop optimising

If the difference between your optimistic and conservative estimates does not change the answer, you have priced it precisely enough. Spending another hour on comparables to move the number by twenty dollars is a poor use of an evening.
