Cost to run an electric oven per hour
What an electric oven costs
At 17 cents a kilowatt hour, an electric oven costs 40.8 cents an hour while it is drawing power. 1 hours a day with 100 percent average draw is 2.40 kWh a day, $12.24 a month and $148.92 a year. Change any of those three numbers in the calculator and the answer moves with them, because there is nothing else in the sum.
The label figure is 2400 watts. That is what the device draws while it is working, not what it draws around the clock.
| Hours of use a day | Energy a day | Cost a month | Cost a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 h | 2.40 kWh | $12.24 | $148.92 |
| 2 h | 4.80 kWh | $24.48 | $297.84 |
| 4 h | 9.60 kWh | $48.96 | $595.68 |
| 8 h | 19.20 kWh | $97.92 | $1,191.36 |
What changes the number
- The element cycles on and off once the oven reaches temperature, so an hour at 200 degrees is closer to 1.6 kWh than 2.4 kWh.
- Preheating a large oven takes 10 to 15 minutes at full draw. For anything under half an hour, that preheat is a large share of the total.
- Fan ovens reach temperature faster and run at a lower setting than conventional ovens, which is why the same recipe often costs less in a fan model.
Find your own wattage
On the rating plate behind the door or at the back. Ovens are commonly 2,000 to 3,000 W, and the grill element is the higher figure.
What this does not include
It does not count the hob. A ceramic hob and an induction hob are separate loads and induction is the more efficient of the two.
Check it against your own numbers
The [running cost calculator](../index.html?device=electric-oven) opens with this device already selected and its wattage filled in. Replace the wattage with your own reading, set the hours you actually use, and the monthly and yearly figures update in place.
